Liberation struggle pioneer Kambo Shixungileni is no more

OSHAKATI; Another pioneer of the liberation struggle, Simeon Kambo Shixungileni passed away in the Oshakati Intermediate Hospital in the Oshana Region on Tuesday.

Governor of the Oshikoto Region, Penda ya Ndakolo confirmed the death to Nampa on Tuesday afternoon, saying Shixungileni died at midday.

He was 80.

“It is true, the brave man and one of the heroes of the liberation struggle for our country’s independence is gone,” the governor said.

Shixungileni was rushed and admitted to that hospital last Saturday after falling sick at his house at the King Kauluma Settlement near Oshivelo in the Oshikoto Region.

He was one of the six guerrillas of the then Swapo military wing, South West Africa Liberation Army (SWALA), who started the armed liberation struggle at Omugulugwombashe in the Omusati Region on 26 August 1966.

This group of Swapo guerrillas was led by John ya Otto Nankudhu, who died in June 2011.

Shixungileni is survived by his wife Teopolina and six children.
