Live Presidential Debate Cancelled

THE live presidential debate which was supposed to be hosted by The Namibian today has been cancelled.

The Namibian’s multimedia editor Johnathan Beukes said they decided to cancel the debate, which was to be streamed live because some presidential candidates pulled out at the last minute.

“We were hoping all opposition candidates would attend after the Swapo Party candidate (Hage Geingob) had indicated that he was not going to make it,” Beukes said.

He said they planned to go ahead without Geingob because they felt Namibians deserved an opportunity to gauge which candidate was worth their time and vote.

“We believe that it was going to be a platform to hold these leaders accountable and for them to show transparency,” he said.

The Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) was supposed to host the debate but its director general, Albertus Aochamub, last week said NBC will not broadcast the debate. He refused to give reasons.

Graham Hopwood, the Institute for Public Policy Research executive director, had earlier also supported the debate, saying that after 24 years, Namibia should be able to organise live presidential debates.

Eight political parties had indicated their willingness to take part in the live debate.
