’Local Is Lekker’ Boxing Bonanza

Jatoorora “The Sting” Tjingavete will take on Peter Malakia in a welterweight fight over 10 rounds, in the main bout of the ‘Local is Lekker’ boxing tournament at the Independence Arena in Katutura on Saturday, 7 June.

The tournament is being organised by the MTC Nestor Sunshine Boxing and Fitness Academy, which said that it was going back to its roots, since its first professional event was staged a the venue in November 2001. During this event, Frans ‘Rambo” Hantindi knocked out Farai Kachigwada of Zimbabwe in the seventh round to win the WBA Pan African welterweight title.

“This would indeed be history in the making as the academy came from nothing and now we are one of the best promotional academies in the world as we managed to produce several world rated boxers and world champions. Now we are coming back home to thank our people who made us, we are going back home to show the people that what they invested in us was worthwhile and we are here to stay,” the academy stated in a press release.

There will be ten fights on the programme, featuring Namibian amateur and professional boxers. The gates will open at 10h00 and the first amateur bout will start at 10h15, while the

first professional bout will start at 13h00. There will also be performances by musicians such as The Dogg, DJ Chin Chila and DJ Alba.

Besides that, numerous Namibian continental and international champions will be in attendance and will display their belts at the event.

“We promised you that we will put this nation on the world map and we did that. That is why we brought all the champions here today to show the titles they won during the 13 years after our first tournament right here in Katutura. The world class fighters and world champions will be available for autographs,” the press release stated.

The boxers who will be displaying their belts at the event are Paulus Ambunda, Tyson Ushona, Paulus Moses, Vikapita Meroro, Jatoorora Tjingavete, Wilbeforce Shihepo, Martin Haikali, Immanuel Naidjala, Julius Indongo, Abmerk Shidjuu, Paulus Nuumbembe and Sacky Shikukutu.

The main curtain raiser fight on Saturday will be a national middleweight title fight between Walter Kuutondokwa and Theophilus Vatileni over 10 rounds.

In other exciting match-ups, Mike Shonena will take on Tommy Hango in a welterweight fight over six rounds, while Manfred Haimbanga will take on Sebastian Nataniel in a junior light weight fight over four rounds.

VIP tickets cost N$200 while general tickets cost N$30. Tickets are available at the Namibian Boxing Control Board office.
