Lüderitz Swapo Councillors Defy Party Directive

LUumlDERITZ mayor Susan Ndjaleka has retained the mayoral chain for the second consecutive year during the council’s political office-bearers’ election held on Monday.

Ndjaleka will be deputised by Hilaria Mukapuli who was also re-elected.

However, Silas Hamukwaya was replaced by Calvin Mwiya as chairperson after the Swapo-dominated council defied the party line to re-elect its council representatives to the positions they held before Monday’s elections.

A directive from Swapo secretary general distributed to all regional coordinators stated that the party’s top leadership “has resolved that the status quo should remain”.

“It is expected that all structures of the party adhere to this important directive,” the directive further reads.

The Karas Swapo Party regional coordinator Mathew Mumbala yesterday said he had received “unofficial” reports that the party representatives had defied the party instruction of keeping the status quo.

“I am still waiting for an official report, before reporting to the secretary general’s office,” said Mumbala.

Hamukwaya and Festus Kamati were also elected to serve on the management committee, while Abraham Nekomba was elected as additional member. RDP councillor Jordan Nambili remains as ordinary member of the council.
