M amp K Gertze Tops U20 League

M amp K Gertze High School has overtaken Eldorado High School at the top of the Namibia Football Association (NFA) Women Under 20 League after six rounds of matches.

The turnaround is a result of competition having become fierce for places in the team going to compete at the upcoming Zone VI Games in Zimbabwe.

Last weekend the table toppers from Rehoboth were awarded two goals and three points to go top of the log after their opponents, Jan Jonker Secondary School, failed to show up for the encounter at the Eldorado High School Sports Field.

M amp K Gertze then crushed Cosmos High 5-0 to go top of the log on 16 points from six games. Eldorado High, who are on 12 points, were relegated to second place after losing 2-1 to the Galz amp Goals team.

The Okahandja Schools team managed to record their first victory in their third match when they beat Centaurus High 4-1 to be ranked fifth on the log with four points.

Cosmos High also managed to get a win over the weekend, as they overcame A Shipena High 2-0 and are now sixth on four points after five games, with A Shipena sitting in eighth place after five games with a solitary point to their name.

The League is expected to be completed by the end of July, coordinator Cole Mungendje said.

“The girls have shown a willingness to play and they have to juggle school and football. It has not been easy, but we are looking at concluding [the league] by end of this month,” Mungendje said.

The league was established as a strategy to bridging the gap in players’ development in women’s football in the country and also to help produce players for the annual Zone VI national side.

The Namibia ladies team for the Zone VI Games will be coached by the experienced Max Johnson, assisted by Bertus Bock, who is the chief scout of the League.

League matches are played at Eldorado High School Sports Field and NFA Technical Centre.
