Maltahöhe holidaymaker drowns in Swakopmund

SWAKOPMUND; A 20-year-old woman from Maltahöhe in the Hardap Region drowned in Swakopmund on Sunday.

The incident occurred at the waterfront in the Vineta residential area at around 17h10.

Detective Chief Inspector Erastus Iikuyu of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) at Walvis Bay in the Erongo Region confirmed on Monday that Martha Boois was swimming with her boyfriend at the time of the incident.

He said the two fell into a hole while swimming.

While her boyfriend was rescued by lifeguards, Boois could not be saved.

Iikuyu said Boois’ body was retrieved immediately, and her next of kin have been informed.

Asked what message the police has for holidaymakers, the top officer said the only way to avoid drowning is to be careful.

“They must take care of themselves, and also make sure there are lifeguards nearby,” he stated.
