Man fined for stealing David Beckham cologne

A 39-year-old Walvis Bay man was handed a fine of N.dollars 1 500 for stealing a few bottles of perfume and cologne of world-famous fragrance brands such as David Beckham and Ferrari, from a shop here.

Sakaria Hailonga appeared before Magistrate Vicky Nicolaidis in the Walvis Bay Magistrate’s Court on Monday, facing charges of theft.

During cross-examination, Hailonga admitted to stealing the eau de toilette from a Foschini shop in Walvis last week Sunday.

“I stole the perfumes so that I can sell them and get some money to buy school uniforms for my children. I do not have a job, and I had to find a way to take care of my children,” Hailonga told the court.

David Beckham is an international football legend who has played for European giants such as Manchester United and Real Madrid. His colognes for men are worth about N.dollars 1 785.

Upon his admission of guilt, Magistrate Nicolaidis sentenced Hailonga to a fine of N.dollars 1 500 or five months imprisonment.

“I was caught while exiting the shop. All the perfumes were returned to the shop,” he said.

The suspect had asked the court to give him a fine of only N.dollars 500.
