Man jumps from Khomasdal bridge in attempt to commit sucide

WINDHOEK; A 44-year-old resident of the Wanaheda area in the capital allegedly jumped from a bridge in Khomasdal in a failed attempt to end his life over the weekend.

He, however, survived with serious injuries to his arms and head.

The man has now been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Windhoek Central Hospital.

Namibian Police Force (NamPol) spokesperson Sergeant Slogan Matheus told a media briefing here on Sunday the man allegedly attacked his 42-year-old girlfriend with a panga, injuring her head.

The incident occurred at their house in City Street, Wanaheda, on Friday at around 13h30.

He then drove to a bridge near Florence Nightingale Street. He parked next to the bridge and locked the car before jumping from the bridge on to the road beneath it in an attempt to commit suicide.

It is alleged that the couple had been embroiled in a fight over their relationship.

The woman was on Sunday receiving medical attention at the Katutura State Hospital, with her condition reported to be serious but stable.

Police investigations continue, Matheus said.
