Man sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment on attempted murder charge

ONDANGWA: A 29-year-old man was on Thursday sentenced to an effective eight years’ imprisonment on a charge of attempted murder in the Ondangwa Regional Court.

Festus Uugwanga from the Oniihandi village of Oniipa Constituency in the Oshikoto Region stood accused of stabbing his 23-year-old lover, Hilma Fillemon, with a 44cm knife 17 times all over her body on 03 November 2012 at the Sarayevo Bar at Ondangwa, where Fillemon was employed.

This followed a break-up between the two.

As a result of the attack, she lost one of her fingers and one kidney.

Ondangwa regional court magistrate, Alvin Kenneth Simpson sentenced him to 12 years in jail, with four of the 12 years suspended for five years on condition that he is not found guilty of attempted murder or assault with the intend to do grievous bodily harm during the suspension period.

Simpson also took into account the one year and seven months he had been incarcerated in the Police holding cells since his arrest on 03 November 2012.
