Man shot dead after trying to stop robbery

WINDHOEK: A 32-year-old man was shot dead on Friday after he and his father went to investigate a suspected robbery at a neighbour’s house in the Rocky Crest residential area of the capital.

Adrian Burger was struck in the stomach by the same bullet which hit his father, Allen Burger, 62, on the right elbow.

The Namibian Police Force’s Sergeant Slowgan Matheus told the media here on Monday the Burgers heard commotion in a flat at Bela Rosa Carolina Flats in Rocky Crest, put on their flat lights and emerged from their flat to investigate the noise.

The suspect allegedly fired at the two men while fleeing.

“Adrian Burger died on the spot while being attended to by paramedics,” the sergeant said.

The suspect is still at large, and police investigations into the matter continue.

In a separate incident also in the Khomas Region, a 22-year-old man identified as Mario Cloete was stabbed with a sharp object in the chest and died upon arrival at the Katutura State Hospital on Saturday.

The incident took place between 22h00 to 23h00 along Zedekias Ogamb Street in the Gemeente location.

His next of kin have been informed, and police investigations into the matter continue.

In the Onesi village of the Omusati Region, a young man was shot dead by another youngster while they were looking after cattle on Friday at about 10h00.

Matheus said four young men were allegedly left at a cattle post by elders who went looking for animals which went missing.

The youngsters started playing with a shot gun left in their possession.

“In the process, one of the boys loaded the shotgun with a live bullet. One of the boys allegedly snatched the gun from the other, and the bullet went off and hit one of the boys in the neck,” Matheus explained.

The victim has been identified as Walipeni Simeon.

In the Oshana Region, a pensioner burned to death after his homestead in the Onanadi – Endola village allegedly caught fire on Sunday.

Matheus said the fire was caused by a candle that had been left unattended.

The deceased has been identified as Ngola Nghikomonanye, and his next of kin have been informed.

Still in the Oshana Region, a 44-year-old man was found dead in his bedroom in Oshakati on Monday.

The deceased has been identified as Shuudifouye Alweendo.

He was last seen at his family house on Saturday.

The deceased was discovered after family members went to investigate a foul smell coming from his room. They found him dead on the bedroom floor.

His next of kin have been informed.

At Ondangwa in the Oshana Region, the body of a decomposed baby was found at the Etambo village dumpsite on Thursday.

The discovery was made by a woman and her son who usually visit the dumpsite.

According to Matheus, the body had clearly been there for days, and thus the police could not tell whether it was the remains of a baby boy or girl.

The remains have however been taken to a forensic pathologist, and police are calling on Ondangwa residence to come forth if they know of any woman who was expecting a baby and now does not have one.
