Mandrax Worth N$294 000 Confiscated, Three Arrested

THREE people were arrested in Windhoek on Friday for possessing 4 912 Mandrax tablets with a street value of N$294 720.

Khomas regional commander Heinrich Tjiveze said they acted on a tip-off from some community members, who had said that there was a truck travelling from South Africa to Namibia via the TransKalahari highway, carrying a consignment of drugs.

Tjiveze said the arrest took place between 14h00-14h30 at the premises of Epic Transport in Van der Byl Street in the Northern industrial area.

The three male suspects – the truck driver and his two cohorts – have been identified as Namibians, aged between 26 and 36 years.

“The drugs were transported in an Epic Transport truck, concealed in a travelling bag and packed in five transparent bags,” said Tjiveze.

He said the three men are in police custody and will appear at the Katutura Magistrate Court today. The commander also said another Namibian truck driver en-route to Namibia was also caught with a consignment of cannabis on the same day from the same truck company. He said the suspect’s truck was already discovered by the South African authorities when he made his getaway.

“The truck driver was driving back home from South Africa when his trailer broke down. He then abandoned the trailer and continued his journey back to Namibia where we arrested him,” he said. Tjiveze said his case is likely to be handled by the South African authorities.

Tjiveze urged community members to report anyone dealing with or possessing of illegal drugs to the police, adding that families were destroyed by drugs as those who suffer from the consequences of drugs are not the sellers themselves but their families. “Organised crime is difficult to detect and we need the assistance of the community. They should give us tip-offs and we will protect them,” he said. He said investigations into both cases continue.
