maruru town will host Olympic Day celebration

WINDHOEK: The town of Omaruru will host an Olympic Day celebration on Saturday.

This is aimed at motivating local athletes to realise the importance of participating in Olympic Games in future, and will be the first ‘mini-Olympic’ event to be held in that town.

About 1 000 Namibians will celebrate the Olympic Day in Omaruru, said sports officer in the Ministry of Youth, National Service, Sports and Culture for Omaruru in the Erongo Region, Berthold Karumendu on Tuesday.

Athletes will compete in karate, tennis, basketball, netball, volleyball, boxing and football at the Luna Park sports field.

Karumendu said the highlights of the event will be the football match between players from Omaruru and Karibib, as well as a boxing bonanza, which will end off the day’s activities.

Preparations are well-underway, and all towns in the Erongo Region were being urged to send teams to the event.
