Maternity Waiting Home for Kunene

THE Office of First Lady Penehupifo Pohamba is planning to construct a state-of-the-art maternity waiting home for expectant mothers in the Kunene region.

This facility, which will accommodate women nearing their delivery date, will be constructed in Opuwo, the region’s administrative capital.

A committee consisting of various stakeholders was established earlier this year to carry out a feasibility study for the project, and to secure an erf.

At the committee’s last meeting held in the town on Friday, Kunene health director Thomas Shapumba announced that the First Lady will visit Opuwo next Monday (24 November) to familiarise herself with the progress made by the committee so far. The maternity waiting home will accommodate 90 expectant women, and will have a recreational facility which will be used for educational purposes.

It will be constructed about 50 metres from the Opuwo State Hospital where a modern, well-equipped maternity ward was opened earlier this year.

The construction of the facility is expected to start early next year, but its expected total cost has not yet been made public.

It is expected that the waiting home will reduce the maternity mortality rate in the Kunene region as it will enable more women to deliver their babies in a hospital, instead of at villages.
