Meet Miss Namibia 2014 Guest Designer, Paul Van Zyl

WELL known Cape Town fashion designer and businessman Paul van Zyl will bring his designs to Namibia as the guest designer at the Miss Namibia 2014 pageant.

Hailing from Postmasburg in the Northern Cape where he matriculated, he then qualified with a BA Degree in Geography, Mathematics, Engineering and Drawing.

Van Zyl has become known as one of South Africa’s top couturiers. He is a former mathematician who left teaching after 13 years to pursue a career in fashion design almost 20 years ago.

He soon made his mark on the South African fashion scene and was widely recognised for his flair, creativity and the fact that his garments have a signature fit. The fit, his sense for proportion as well as his understanding of difficult figures has made him a very popular designer.

Since the inception of Cape Town Fashion Week, Paul was a regular designer to show his haute couture collections annually. He did this for six years running and also took part in the Johannesburg Audi Fashion Week.

Paul had a studio in Johannesburg but decided to close up shop there after two years as the travelling and consequent demand were just too much for him, together with all his business responsibilities in Cape Town.

In 2006, he took part in the Acapulco Fashion Extravaganza, which took place on the beach in front of 5 000 guests with supermodels from all over the world.

In 2007, he was invited by the South African embassy in Berlin to do a fashion show at the Ritz Plaza in Berlin, Germany.

Paul was also invited in September of 2013 to take part in Nigeria Fashion Week in Port Harcourt where he was one of three invited international designers.

Paul is the proud owner of Elegance Fabrics in Cape Town. He has two branches, one in Canal Walk and the other in Cavendish Square. Elegance Fabrics is regarded as one of the best fabric shops in South Africa, importing very exclusive and top of the range fabrics.

He travels at least four times a year to attend shows and fairs from Paris to Seoul to select the most exclusive and best quality fabrics.

Paul has dressed the finalists of the Miss Namibia beauty pageant for two years running and has dressed Miss Namibia for the Miss World and Miss Universe pageants. He has also dressed numerous celebrities, like former Miss World Michelle McClean-Bailey, former Miss South Africa Cindy Nel, Joanne Strauss and Vanessa Carreira, to name but a few.
