Minister says sports is heavily underfunded due to limited budgetary constraints

WINDHOEK: Sport, Youth and National Services Minister Jerry Ekandjo says sports is heavily underfunded due to limited budgetary constraints.

Ekandjo made these remarks in the National Assembly on Wednesday, during his budget motivation speech.

He stated that the ministry is at an advanced stage of finalizing the National Sports Plan (NSP), which will spell out programs and activities within the sport fraternity for the next 10 years.

Ekandjo explained that the overall strategy for the plan is to strengthen effective sports administration, capacitate human resources, and to create a conducive environment for athletes to participate at the highest level, both locally and internationally.

He said expected results during the tenure of the implementation of the plan should be to create a winning sporting nation that would bring honor and pride to the country.

Moreover, the sport minister said construction, maintenance and renovation of sport facilities in the current financial year will be a focal area.

The Sports Ministry received a budget allocation of N.dollars 507 570 000 00 in the 2015/2016 financial year.
