Ministry of Veterans’ Affairs grants veteran status to 27,014 Namibians

WINDHOEK: The Ministry of Veterans’ Affairs has so far granted veteran status to 27 014 Namibians who have contributed positively to the course of the country’s struggle for independence.

This was announced by the Minister of Veterans’ Affairs, Dr Nickey Iyambo, when he tabled his ministry’s budget of N.dollars 1,5 billion for the 2014/15 financial year in the National Assembly yesterday.

The minister explained that the Ministry of Veterans’ Affairs continues to register Namibians who feel they have contributed to the course of Namibia’s independence.

Under the registration activity of the veterans, the ministry will review the existing regulations of the Veterans’ Act Amendment Bill of 2013, and formulate new ones which will interpret those new amendments introduced in the Amendment of the Veterans’ Act of 2013.

The ministry will also continue printing veterans’ identification cards until such a time that all veterans are issued with their cards, and the ministry has requested N.dollars 581 000 during the 2014/15 financial year to cover these activities.

Iyambo further told fellow parliamentarians that his ministry will continue paying a monthly subvention to unemployed veterans, and veterans’ whose income is below the taxable threshold.
