OMARURU: More than 20 teams of athletes from schools around Namibia converged on Omaruru in the Erongo Region today for a one-day mini-Olympic event.

The event is being held to celebrate Olympic Day, which is celebrated all over the world on 23 June every year.

It is also aimed at motivating local athletes to realise the importance of participating in Olympic Games in future.

Participants competed in tennis, basketball, netball, volleyball, boxing and football at the Luna Park sports field.

Opening the event, the Omaruru Constituency Councillor Michael Uparura Tjirare urged all athletes to compete fairly.

He said sport is a unifier of nations and of people of all races and cultures.
