Mweshipandeka School Bullies to Face the Music

Deputy Director of Education in Oshana Region, Immanuel Aipanda, said former and current Grade 12 learners implicated in the bullying of junior learners at schools in the region would be dealt with accordingly.

Aipanda said this when approached by New Era about an incident where current Grade 12 learners at Mweshipandeka High School in Ongwediva allegedly assaulted and robbed junior learners within the school premises last week. Unconfirmed reports also suggest that some of the alleged bullies are in Grade 12 at the neighbouring Gabriel Taapopi Senior Secondary School.

It is alleged that some learners have lost all their cash, including money intended for school and hostel fees, and one learner sustained a swollen face after the unruly previous and current senior pupils at that school allegedly assaulted junior male learners by slapping them and instructing them to hand over their money.

One learner, who is in Grade 11, allegedly retaliated by fighting back, but the bullies all turned against him and beat him up.

The 18-year-old learner, who sustained a swollen face, allegedly refused to lay charges and rather demanded an apology from the perpetrators.

The disturbances caused by these senior learners allegedly forced the teachers to take some of the culprits to the police where they were later released on warning. The students were also made to carry out physical exercises by the police that include push-ups and sit-ups before they were taken back to school.

Unfortunately, the former learners at Gabriel Taapopi Senior Secondary School were not part of the group that was taken to police, as they had already left the school when the teachers took the current pupil to Ongwediva Police Station.

“It is an unfortunate situation and we don’t condone such behaviour. We told the school to carry out a proper investigation, take necessary actions and send the report to our office. We will, of course, aise the school if we see that the action taken is not appropriate.
