Nam campaigning for nuclear weapon-free world

WINDHOEK: Namibia does not support the use of its uranium for nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices.

Nuclear weapons could increase international instability, and the international community should ensure total non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, said Mariental Urban Constituency Councillor Barakias Namwandi in his presentation during the 130th session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) held from 16 March to 20 March 2014 in Geneva, Switzerland.

Namwandi was part of a delegation of Namibian Members of Parliament (MPs) at the IPU meeting.

During a panel discussion on the contribution of Parliaments towards a nuclear weapon-free world, the Namibian delegation stated that although Namibia is ranked the fifth largest producer of uranium worldwide, the country ratified the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) on 15 April 1998.

A media statement availed to Nampa on Friday said that in this respect, Namibia does not support the use of its uranium for nuclear weapons or explosive nuclear devices.

Namibia will thus ensure that uranium oxide exported from Namibia is used for peaceful purposes only.
