Nam praised for accepting women’s champs’ hosting

WINDHOEK: The president of the CAF Organising Committee for Women’s Football, Dr Molefi Oliphant commended the Namibian government for accepting the challenge to host the continental women’s football tournament.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Women’s Championship will take place from 11 to 25 October 2014 at the Sam Nujoma Stadium.

Speaking during the draw for the ninth edition of the games here on Saturday, Oliphant said it was the first time that the draw was held outside CAF headquarters, and also in the host country.

“Normally, it’s always chaotic, so credit should be given to Namibia,” he noted.

Recognition should also be given to Namibia Football Association (NFA) president John Muinjo for the role he played in ensuring that Namibia got the opportunity to host the Cup, said Oliphant.

“Muinjo worked tirelessly and aggressively to make sure that it is Namibia’s chance to host the cup,” he indicated.

Oliphant further said they are looking forward to the tournament, and especially for the host team the Brave Gladiators ‘to shine’ during the competition.

He also applauded Telecom Namibia Mobile (TN Mobile) for being the title sponsor of the tournament.

On his part, Muinjo also praised TN Mobile for sponsoring the tournament, saying it is the first time that the tournament has a title sponsor.

He then called on the Namibian nation to go out in large numbers to fill the stadiums, and show support to the Namibian women’s team.

Namibia has been drawn to play in Group A against the Ivory Coast, Zambia and Nigeria.

Group B comprises South Africa, Cameroon, Ghana and Algeria.

The tree top teams qualify for the 2015 International Federation of Football Associations’ (FIFA) Women’s World Cup in Canada.
