Namas Plagued By No Shows

The Namibian Annual Music Awards kicked off with a whimper as it staged its very first industry awards at the Swakopmund Indoor Sports Centre this evening.

Presenting brand new categories such as Best Entertainment Journalist and Best Radio DJ, the awards show began without so much as a welcoming word to the half empty hall.

Plagued by no shows which included the absence of Christian Polloni, Exit and VM6 who won Best Producer, Radio Song of the Year, Best Acapella and Best Gospel respectively, the show had its fair share of awkward silences and dismal drops in energy which did nothing to distract the audience from the chill in the air.

In terms of the entertainment, artists such as Kanibal, Lady May, Tunakie, Lize Ehlers and Jean-Michael brought their A-game, but the event suffered due to lacklustre presenting which was fleetingly alleviated by jazzed up journos Ndapewoshali Shapwanale and Best Entertainment Journalist winner Gordon Joseph who definitely need to design a tutorial on How Not to Bore an Audience to Tears.

With regard to highlights, the honouring of Axali Doeumlseb went down like a spoonful of sugar at an event which wasn’t as sweet as it could have been. Doeumlseb is the writer of ‘Namibia, Land of the Brave’ and his Lifetime Achievement award was met with hearty applause from the proud audience, some of whom sang along to the national anthem.

All in all, the show left one feeling that they were attending an event on autopilot. Masters of ceremonies Pombili Shilongo and Matthew Kapofi barely featured and the event seemed to lack a driving force and sense of ownership from the hosts which left one feeling somewhat adrift.

The hope is that tomorrow will be better. The question is why separate the industry and main music awards and stage a sub par pre-event as if the industry nominees are some kind of redheaded step child you want out of the way?

These are questions that need answers. Tune in tomorrow at the same time at the same place to see if tomorrow provides any. Follow all the NAMAs news on The Namibian’s Facebook page and Twitter account.
