Namibia Crash to Big Defeats Against North West

Namibia crashed to two big defeats against North West in their penultimate matches in the Cricket South Africa competition in Potchefstroom over the weekend.

North West wrapped up their three-day match within two days when they registered an innings and 112-run victory on Friday, while they won the T20 encounter by 119 runs on Saturday.

In the three-day match, Namibia were immediately under pressure after being sent in to bat by North West, as they lost their first four wickets for only 16 runs.

Stephan Baard and Nicolaas Scholtz gave Namibia hope with an 82-run partnership for the fifth wicket, but when Baard was out for 66, North West soon wrapped up the tail. Scholtz was last man out for 45, but none of the other batsmen managed to reach double figures as the whole team was dismissed for 131 runs.

North West’s innings got off to a steady start, but Namibian spinner Bernard Scholtz struck with two wickets off successive balls to restrict them to 85 for three wickets.

Rassie van der Dussen and Brett Pelser however put North West in charge with a 208-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

Van der Dussen went on to score 156 and Pelser 115 as North West reached 354 all out. Christopher Coombe was Namibia’s best bowler with five wickets for 71 runs, while Brandon Viret took three for 88 runs.

Namibia’s batsmen once again struggled in the second innings as the whole team was dismissed for 111 runs, as North West wrapped up a comprehensive victory.

Xander Pitchers top scored with 31 while Bredell Wessels added 28.

On Saturday, North West thrashed Namibia by 119 runs in their T20 match.

Namibia won the toss and their decision to send North West in to bat soon backfired as North West reached a massive 226 runs for four wickets off their 20 overs, at an average of 11,30 per over.

Nicky van den Bergh led the way with a brilliant century, scoring 101 off only 45 balls, that included an incredible 12 sixes.

Rassie van der Dussen added 60 off 47 balls and Dwaine Pretorius 33 not out off 24 balls.

Bernard Scholtz was Namibia’s best bowler, taking two wickets for 25 runs off four overs, while Brandon Viret and Nicolaas Scholtz took one wicket each.

Namibia’s innings got off to a disastrous start as they lost their first three wickets for only seven runs, and although Nicolaas Scholtz led a valiant fightback, they could not recover.

Namibia crashed to 58 for seven wickets before Bredell Wessels joined Scholtz in a 49-run partnership, as they reached 107 for seven wickets off their 20 overs.

Scholtz was Namibia’s top scorer with 52 not out off 53 balls, while Bredell added 24 not out off 24 balls.
