Namibia U17 Knocked Out By Mozambique

Namibia were knocked out of the African U17 qualifying tournament after losing 1-0 to Mozambique at the Sam Nujoma Stadium on Saturday.

With the two sides having played to a 1-1 draw in Maputo a fortnight ago, Mozambique progressed 2-1 on aggregate to the next round.

Mozambican midfielder Edmilson Mucavele scored the winning goal early in the second half when he received the ball in space and scored with a fine shot from the edge of the box.

Mozambique enjoyed more possession and had the better chances, while Namibia seldom looked like finding the net.

Namibian midfielder Dwayne Swartz missed an early chance when he shot over the bar after a fine dribble by Tuhafeni Ndaheke, while the latter volleyed narrowly wide from a Brendon Kotungondo cross midway through the first half.

Mozambique also wasted several chances, with Mucavele heading narrowly wide from a cross by Adriano Santos, while Namibian keeper Matias Nauta did well to save a dangerous cross by Luis Chuva.

Mozambique broke the deadlock on 53 minutes when Mucavele received the ball just outside the box and beat Nauta with a shot that hit the corner of the net.

Mozambique kept on attacking and their impressive winger Hermengildo Capena came close to scoring twice, when he first blasted a free kick over the bar and then had a cracking shot well saved.

For Namibia, Ricardo Jassie came close when he broke into the box midway through the second half but Mozambique’s keeper Arlindo Cossa saved well at his feet.

Namibia hardly threatened in the final quarter and Mozambique held on for a comfortable victory.
