Namibia Win Six Gold At SA Level 1 Champs

A Namibian NASU team won six gold and two bronze medals at the Telkom SA Level 1 Championships which took place in Germiston from the 28th to the 30th April 2014.

A NASU team of 20 swimmers took part in the prestigious gala of 830 participants at the Delville swimming pool in Germiston.

This was one of three Level 1 galas that were held in South Africa, but this was the largest participant wise. Kenya, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Botswana, Swaziland and clubs from Eastern Gauteng, Northern Gauteng and Limpopo, were some of the g competition our swimmers had to contend with.

Although this was the first international swimming gala attended by most of the NASU swimmers, they did not shy away from the doing their best and dealing with the competition.

The 13-year-old Heinrich Burger of Namib Swimming Academy, won three gold medals, when he raced in front from start to finish, in the 50m, 100m and 200m Backstroke events for Boys 13 year old.

Johann Serfontein (12) from Dolphins Swimming Club won gold for the Boys 12 year old 100m Butterfly and a bronze for the 50m Butterfly.

Mbeurora Kaumanika (11) of Namib Swimming Academy, sprung a surprise on all his opponents when he won a gold medal for the 50m Freestyle (Boys 11 year old), after he came tenth in the heats. He also won a bronze medal for the Boys 11 year old 50 m Butterfly.

Most of the swimmers improved their personal best times and in total the NASU swimmers made 16 finals.

All the swimmers showed outstanding performances during the three day gala and did Namibian swimming proud.
