Namibian Archers Win 11 Medals At SA Nationals

NAMIBIA’s archers have won a total of eleven medals at the 64th Annual South African National Championships which took place at Marks Park Sports Club in Johannesburg last week.

It was an impressive display by the athletes of the Archery Association of Namibian (AAN), winning eight gold, two silver and one bronze medal over the course of six competition days.

“We are very happy with the results and the way our athletes competed at the event. It shows that our archers are able to compete at the highest level,” AAN secretary Karola Woortman said.

The results will furthermore give the Namibian archers much-needed confidence ahead of the African Archery Youth Championships which are scheduled to get underway at the DTS Sports Club in Windhoek from 13th to 16th April.

The most impressive performances came from Ruan van Staden, Babette Taljaard, Xander Reddig and Hanneacute Snyman. The quartet each won a gold medal in the 1440 “Full FITA” Round as well as in the 720 round.

Snyman, shooting in the Compound U13 girls division, went on to become the first Namibian archer to shoot more than 1400 points during the 1440 “Single FITA” round.

The talented youngster recorded 1404 points, making her only the second woman in Africa to achieve this elusive mark. According to AAN President Frank Bockmuumlhl, there are no more than 100 archers worldwide who have managed to shoot 1400 points or more.

Meanwhile, 15-year-old Reddig smashed the minimum qualification standard for the Youth Olympic Games for the second time in less than three weeks, scoring a personal best of 640 in the Recurve Cadet Men’s division. His best score stood at 639 after the “Independence Shoot” in March. Reddig is only the second Namibian after swimmer Zandreacute Oberholzer to qualify for the Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China.

In other action, Hendrik van Eeden, participating in the Compound Cadet Men division, clinched a silver medal in the 1440 “Full FITA” round while also winning a bronze medal in the 720 round. His teammate Jackson Engel won the silver medal in the 720 round of the Compound Cadet Men.
