Namibian Bowls Team Ready

Namibia’s Commonwealth Games team has settled in among 6 500 athletes and officials at the Athletes’ Village on the east side of Glasgow for the Commonwealth Games which kick off with the Opening Ceremony on Wednesday.

Namibia’s bowlers will be the first to compete starting on Thursday morning with the Pairs competition and Thursday afternoon with the first round of the Trips event. The Singles and Fours events will only commence on Sunday.

The Namibian bowls team consists of the following players:

Pairs – Will Esterhuizen, Douw Calitz

Trips – Ewald Vermeulen, Steven Peak, Gideon Appollis

Singles – Will Esterhuizen

Fours – Douw Calitz, Steven Peak, Gideon Appollis, Ewald Vermeulen

Namibia’s highly experienced pairs team is expected to impress during the competition, national coach, Sandy Joubert said.

Esterhuizen and Calitz finished seventh at the last World Championships and Calitz who is competing in his fifth Commonwealth Games is also a former Singles World Champion.

Esterhuizen also has previous Commonwealth Games experience and impressed with his consistent performance in the run up to the Games, when he helped his club, TransNamib, win the Namibian National Bowls League.
