Namibian U23 Side Not Drawn for Olympics Qualifiers

Namibia’s national U23 football team is in the dark about its participation in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games’ qualifiers.

Namibia is one of 26 African countries which were not included in the draw for the 2015 Confederation of African Football U23 Championship scheduled to take place from 5 to 19 December 2014.

That tournament will determine which three teams will represent the African continent at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Namibia’s exclusion from the CAF championship came about after its application to compete in that competition was not received by the African football mother-body.

Approached for comment on Thursday, U23 team manager Jakes Amaning said the Namibia Football Association did apply to take part in the tournament, but due to unforeseen circumstances its name did not appear in the CAF draw.

“We were surprised to see our country not in the draw. At the moment we are in communication with CAF and hoping that in the next three weeks we will hear good news from them about being included in the draw,” he said.

“When we spoke to CAF they said it might have been a technical error with their system which led to our application not being received,” he explained.

In the meantime, the Namibian U23 team is training twice a week while awaiting the outcome.

Only seven teams will qualify to join the hosts Democratic Republic of the Congo for the CAF U23 Championship set to take place in December.

Qualification for that championship will be played in three phases, and the draw for the third round was held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on 20 September.
