National GBV conference to kick off on Wednesday

WINDHOEK: In view of the escalating gender-based violence (GBV) cases in Namibia, the second national conference on GBV will kick off in Windhoek on Wednesday as part of an overall strategy to address the problem.

A statement availed to Nampa by the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) on Tuesday said the event is organised by the OPM, which will spearhead the preparations and running of the conference.

The two-day conference is aimed at assembling stakeholders to review progress since the first conference in 2007, and to develop strategies to effectively combat GBV against women and children.

It will also be attended by President Hifikepunye Pohamba and former President Sam Nujoma.

Part of the discussions will include a panel discussion focussing on the causes of GBV as well as the link between GBV, HIV/AIDS and alcohol abuse.

Stakeholders from various law-enforcement agencies, the Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare, and the Law Reform and Development Commission are expected to attend the conference.
