National Mass Housing initiative: construction of houses starts at Swakopmund’s DRC informal settlement

SWAKOPMUND: The construction of 3 024 houses under the national Mass Housing initiative started at Swakopmund’s DRC informal settlement last month.

Although officials from the National Housing Enterprise (NHE), which is mandated to construct the low-cost houses could not respond to media queries on the project, Nampa has established that the project has indeed commenced here.

Power-Oyeno Group is the first contractor currently working on the project after the site handing-over in May.

On Friday, some of the employees at the site informed this news agency on condition of anonymity that there are about 200 people working here.

More than 20 houses are under construction at the moment, and are at foundation level.

The Swakopmund municipality has so far serviced 1 014 plots on which the Mass Housing units are to be constructed, and more plots are expected to be serviced as the project continues.

The DRC informal settlement accommodates over 20 000 people who live in wooden establishments as there is no decent housing.
