New-born baby dumped in dustbin

WINDHOEK: The Namibian Police is requesting residents of the Golgota , Nubuamis and Okuryangava residential areas to come forth with any information on the whereabouts of the mother of a baby girl that was dumped along Monte Christo road.

Namibian Police Force (NamPol) Inspector, Slogan Matheus, informed a media briefing on Sunday that a one-day-old baby girl was discovered dumped in a municipal dustbin at the corner of Monte Christo Road and Hereford Road, opposite the Monte Christo service station on Sunday.

The healthy baby girl was found wrapped in a towel by a passerby at around 07h00.

He said the baby was rescued alive from the refuse and taken to the Katutura Intermediate Hospital where she is receiving medical attention.

Matheus added that it is suspected that the mother might have given birth overnight (Saturday night) and dumped the baby right away in the dustbin.

“The suspect (mother of the baby) is unknown at this stage, thus we are appealing to Windhoek residents at large, or any person with information as to who the mother or alternatively the father of this baby girl could be, to come forth,” he said

Any person with information can contact the nearest police station or the Woman and Child Protection unit.

Meanwhile, a case of attempted murder and alternatively concealment of birth has been opened.

In the Hardap Region, 17-year-old Romanus Rooi was stabbed to death in the Takarania New Location in Mariental on Sunday at around 09h15.

The incident took place when the deceased and the victim were on their way into the field to collect firewood.

The suspect, 25, allegedly stabbed Rooi once in the left side of the chest with a knife for unknown reasons.

The suspect has been arrested and will make his first appearance in the Mariental Magistrate Court on Monday.

The deceased’s next of kin has been informed and police investigations continue.

In the Otjozondjupa Region, Seun Mupya, 26, committed suicide by hanging himself with a rope under a tree.

The incident occurred at the Okombungu village in the Opuwo Rural Constituency.

According to Matheus, it is alleged that the deceased had stolen cattle and after they were discovered, he disappeared from home, only to be found hanging under a tree.

No suicide note was left behind and his next of kin has already been informed.

Meanwhile, an eight-year-old female drowned in a water pond at the Okathimakamwe Village in the Okalongo Constituency on Friday afternoon.

The incident occurred when the deceased who was identified as Kathrina Abraham and her six-year-old cousin were trying to get water from the pond.

The deceased slipped and fell into the pond and drowned.

The body was taken to the Okahao Police Mortuary where a post-mortem will be conducted.

Her next of kin has already been informed and police investigations continue.
