New Shopping Centre Opens in Tsumeb

THE Tsumeb Shopping Centre was opened on Tuesday. In a speech read on his behalf by Minister of Trade and Industry, Calle Schlettwein, President Hifikepunye Pohamba thanked shareholders of Reydev Holdings Namibia for investing in the facility.

“Our government welcomes investments of this nature as they contribute to the social and economic development of our country. This investment will go a long way to enhance and expand the availability of goods and services to members of the public through the business outlets that are located in this shopping centre,” said Pohamba.

He said the government believes that the main force behind sustainable economic growth, employment and wealth creation is private investments and economic activities complemented by social or public investments by the state, directly or through state-owned enterprises.

“As such, the private sector clearly has a role to play not only as a catalyst for economic growth and development but also by working with government to implement national policies on the basis of public-private partnerships. The private sector has the greatest potential to create value both for business and the society,” said Pohamba.

He was happy that 95% of the retail space in the shopping centre is reserved and will be taken up by Namibian retailers and businesses.

Pohamba said while the government has identified the sectors of manufacturing, agriculture, tourism and logistics priority areas for development during the Fourth National Development Plan period, other sectors such as wholesale and retail are equally important and make a significant contribution to economic growth.

“In this connection, it will make me even happier if the retailers who are conducting business from this shopping center will also stock and sell Namibian made products. This will go a long way in supporting local manufacturers and producers and help them to expand their operations and strengthen their ability to retain and increase jobs for our people,” he said.
