NSI will sign MoU on technical cooperation with FAO

WINDHOEK: The Namibian Standards’ Institution (NSI) will sign a Memorandum of Understanding on technical cooperation with the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) tomorrow.

An invitation to the signing ceremony availed to Nampa by NSI corporate communications’ officer Theron Kolokwe today said the NSI seeks to further the national development goals of government through strategic partnerships for the benefit of the country.

The MoU will, amongst others, cover the updating of the status of Namibian food safety legislation, and the development of national labelling regulations which are consistent with Codex guidelines and which also meet national needs.

Codex is a collection of internationally-recognised standards, codes of practice, guidelines and other recommendations relating to food, food production and food safety.

Technical support for the effective implementation of the GlobalGap Certification Scheme for the horticulture industry, strengthening institutional and staff capacity in the fields of shellfish inspection, as well as strengthening operations of its laboratory will also be covered in the MoU.

GlobalGap is the world’s leading farm-assurance programme, which translates consumer requirements into good agricultural practices.
