Official election date to be gazetted on 13 Oct.

WINDHOEK; President Hifikepunye Pohamba will proclaim the official election date in the Government Gazette on 13 October 2014.

This is in terms of Section 50(I)(a) of the Electoral Act, 1992 (Act No. 24 of 1992) as amended.

The date has been earmarked by the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) as the day on which Namibia will hold its fifth post independence Presidential and National Assembly Elections.

The ECN said in a media statement on Tuesday that Namibians abroad and seagoing personnel will head to the polls on 14 November this year.

Seagoing personnel will vote in Lüderitz and Walvis Bay.

Presidential candidate nominations and submission of party lists for the National Assembly elections will commence on 13 October 2014 and end 29 October 2014, respectively.

ECN chairperson, Nontemba Tjipueja will hold a public sitting at the Election House in the capital on 29 October from 09H00 to 11H00 to receive the nominations.

Arrangements for the accreditation of both foreign and local election observers are currently underway.

The ECN recently completed a highly successful supplementary voters’ registration exercise from 08 to 20 September 2014.

The provisional voters register is currently being dispatched to designated places in all 121 constituencies of the country, and will be displayed for objections from 01 to 03 October 2014.

The notice announcing the availability of the final voters register will be gazetted on 07 November this year.

Meanwhile, two by-elections are scheduled to take place in the Endola Constituency on 07 November and Windhoek-West on 14 November this year.

This follows the death of two constituency councillors – Ruth Nhinda of the Endola Constituency and Shikwetepo Haindongo of Windhoek West.

There will be no supplementary registration for these by-elections, as such registration was included in the general supplementary registration process which took place in September this year.
