OK Supermarket burns down at Grootfontein

The OK Supermarket in Grootfontein in the Otjozondjupa Region burned down on Wednesday morning.

Grootfontein Mayor Emma Taukuheke told Nampa in an interview on Wednesday that the fire destroyed the entire shop, adding that the blaze was detected between 03h30 and 04h00 Wednesday.

“We still don’t know where the fire came from or what started it. All I can say is that everything in the supermarket was destroyed, including the new stock in the storeroom,” said Taukuheke.

She said officials of the municipality’s Fire Brigade did their best to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby shops and the adjacent First National Bank (FNB) complex.

The Namibian Police Force (NamPol)’s Otjozondjupa Regional Public Relations Officer, Warrant Officer Maureen Mbeha said a case of arson was opened at the Grootfontein Police Station by the shop’s general manager, Sheila Yvonne Grundelling on Wednesday.

Mbeha said the police’s preliminary findings indicate that the fire started in the storeroom at about 04h00, and its cause is still unknown.

Nothing could be salvaged from the shop even after the fire was extinguished by mid-day on Wednesday.

The loss is estimate at about N.dollars 12 million.

The shop belongs to 65-year-old Daniel de Jesus, a resident of Grootfontein.

Police investigations continue.
