Ongandjera People United Party is not a political party

OSHAKATI: A member of the envisaged Ongandjera People United Party, Andreas Kapuku, has vehemently denied that their organisation is politically oriented.

Speaking to the media here on Sunday, he said the Ongandjera People United Party is a pure social organisation aimed at bringing together people of Ongandjera origin to share ideas and experiences socially.

Kapuku, a teacher at the Etalaleko Senior Secondary School (SSS) at Okahao, said the formation of their organisation has been misinterpreted.

“It (Ongandjera people party) is not in line with politics at all. We are people of Swapo, and have no other political party,” he charged.

Kapuku confirmed that the first meeting of the organisation was supposed to take place at Okahao on Sunday, but was postponed until further notice due to the fundraising activity held at the town over the weekend to generate money for the construction of a Swapo-party office there.

He said all people linked to the organisation, including King Johannes Mupongolitha Mupiya of Ongandjera, councillor of Okahao Constituency Isai Kapenambili, Okahao mayor David Isai, and district coordinator of Swapo Leonard Shikulo have been consulted and accepted the idea of bringing people of Ongandjera together.

However, Omusati regional governor Sophia Shaningwa said on Saturday that certain individuals are busy with a character assassination campaign in the Okahao district by implicating the Ongandjera Traditional Authority to an organisation called Ongandjera People United Party.

Addressing the celebration of the Swapo-Party 54th Anniversary by people of the Omusati Region at Okahao, she disclosed the names of several prominent Ongandjera people linked to the said organisation.

These include Mupiya, Kapenambili, and Isai.

Shaningwa threatened that she was going to deal with those involved in this character assassination campaign harshly, and will call all of them to the Ongandjera Palace to explain what their intention is.

“We have experienced it before at the formation of the Congress of Democrats (CoD) when people started with the Forum for the Future just to eventually establish such political organisation,” the governor charged.
