Onghala Combined School in the Ohangwena region last Thursday awarded certificates of appreciation to best learners, teachers and businesspeople who have assisted the school financially this year.

Grade Eight learner Albertina Shapwanale, 14, received a trophy and several gifts for being the best learner overall. Certificates and gifts were also given to the learners who obtained a pass rate of 60 per cent or above in their subjects during the last examination. Annitah Makata was declared the overall best teacher and she too went home with a special prize and gifts.

The three local business personalities – Joseph Haufiku of Boa Vida business outlets, Gottlieb Shapange of Oyengobe Trading and Sakaria Haimbili of Chulla Chulla Investment – were awarded certificates of appreciation at a prize-giving ceremony held at the school on Thursday. In June this year, the three businesspeople teamed-up to donate sports gear and money to the school, and they also used that opportunity to present motivational speeches encouraging the learners to study hard and to have discipline. Onghala Combined School was established in 1976. It has 441 learners in the pre-primary to Grade 9 level, 14 teachers, a secretary and two institutional workers. The school is situated just a few kilometres south of the Namibia-Angola border.
