Oshikoto Knock Zambezi Out

Esmond Kheimiseb’s goal ensured that the Zambezi Region became the first side to be eliminated from 2014 edition of The Namibian Newspaper Cup when they lost 1 – 0 to Oshikoto.

The young forward’s second goal of the tournament kept the hosts top of Group A and on course to aance to the semi-finals.

Oshikoto have collected six points, five ahead of second-placed Kunene, who they will face in their final group contest tomorrow.

Omaheke are without a point and bottom of the group with two games in hand, while Zambezi, whom they play on Saturday lie third and have a point to their name.

Zambezi had the better of the opening exchanges of a fast-paced encounter. However, a lack of killer instinct coupled with poor decision making in the final third meant they failed to register a goal.

The trio of Patrick Matengu, Joseph Mutaniseko and Walubita Samwaka were a constant menace to the Oshikoto rearguard but a combination of wayward finishing and excellent last ditch defending kept the home side in the contest.

After weathering the storm, Oshikoto began to dictate the tempo and mounted several attacks, spearheaded by the lively Malakia Kanime and Kheimseb.

It was through one of these forays into enemy territory that Kheimseb put his side in the lead, when he finished off a swift counter.

Kheimseb collected a pass from Kanime, raced passed his marker and shot straight at goalkeeper Iyan Simulandel who saved with his legs only for the ball to fall kindly to the attacker who made no mistake with his follow-up shot.
