Oshikoto Through to Semis

Hosts Oshikoto secured their place in the semi-finals of The Namibian Newspaper Cup following a 1-1 draw with Kunene.

Oshikoto topped Group A with seven points, followed by Omaheke on six, with Kunene on two and Zambezi last on a single point.

However they had to come from behind to ensure their progression to the next stage of the competition after falling behind to an Innocent Gurirab strike early in the second half.

With the wind in their sails, Kunene were threatening to curtail the hosts’ ambitions as they poured forward in search of a second goal.

Defender Harrison Andjeni tested Oshikoto stopper Kleophas Nangolo with two well struck freekicks from range, forcing the keeper to palm both efforts away.

Midfielder Brendan Pienaar also saw his snapshot turned away by the agile Nangolo, while lumbering forward Kainamuhuze Kavari also had a shot from distance that flew inches over the crossbar.

In response, and after surviving the onslaught, Oshikoto also launched a series of attacks in quick succession, one of which led to the equaliser when their leading scorer Esmond Kheimseb stabbed in a rebound after Kunene keeper Theodor Gaeseb parried Nenok Nathile’s initial shot into his path.

Kheimseb then had another stinging shot from outside the box pushed away by Gaeseb for a corner moments before the final whistle.

In the end neither side could find the winning goal as Oshikoto’s enthusiastic supporters celebrated their progression to the semis with real zest at the final whistle.
