Otjiwarongo by-election supplementary registrations kicks off

OTJIWARONGO: A four-day supplementary voter registration for the Otjiwarongo constituency by-election kicked off on Tuesday morning.

The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN)’s Otjozondjupa regional voter education officer, Beatrice Sililo told Nampa in an interview on Tuesday the supplementary voter registration process ends on Friday.

“We have identified 26 voter registration centres around the constituency,” Sililo said, adding that the actual voting is expected in July this year.

The Otjiwarongo Constituency supplementary voter registration was necessitated by the appointment of former constituency regional councilor, Otto Ipinge to the position of Otjozondjupa Regional Governor by President Hage Geingob in April this year.

He replaced the former Otjozondjupa Regional Governor, Samuel Nuuyoma, who retired.

The ECN regional voter education officer urged all residents in the constituency who changed their surnames and/or added other names due to any social factors to register and exercise their democratic right to vote.

She said all residents that turned 18 years after the mass general voter registrations of 2014 can also register and acquire their voter cards.

“People who also moved to the Otjiwarongo constituency from elsewhere around the country after the general voter registrations of last year, are also advised to acquire new voter cards for them to participate in this by-election,” Sililo said.

She could at this stage not disclose the total number of political parties that will contest the Otjiwarongo by-election.
