OvaHerero Acting Chief Tumbee Tjombe has died

WINDHOEK: OvaHerero Acting Chief Tumbee Tjombe has died.

He passed away at about 01h15 on Thursday morning at the Windhoek Central Hospital where he was hospitalised since last Friday, Jonathan Katjimune, the special advisor to the OvaHerero Traditional Authority told Nampa.

Tjombe was 68, and initially went to hospital after a long illness.

The deceased had been serving the OvaHerero Traditional Authority since the late 1970s under Chief Elifas Tjingaete of Otjombinde in the Omaheke Region, and formally became chief of Otjombinde in 1993.

He was appointed as Acting Chief of the OvaHerero Traditional Authority when that traditional authority was officially recognised by Government in 2008.

Katjimune said the late Tjombe became caretaker chief on 02 June after the death of Paramount Chief Kauaima Riruako. He was then re-affirmed in that position at the All-Chiefs gathering of Omusarakumba near Okahandja from 15 to 18 July this year.

The Council decided then that Tjombe would be acting until 24 August this year, when the OvaHerero Senate would have met to deliberate on how long he would have been acting chief.

People have already started gathering at his house in Katutura, and will later move to the Commando Hall.

Tjombe leaves behind his wife Kaepere Tjombe, and an unspecified number of children and grandchildren.
