Pohamba praises Pupuma

WINDHOEK; President Hifikepunye Pohamba on Monday praised former Standard Bank Chief Executive Officer Mpumzi Pupuma for a job ‘well-done’ while at the helm of the bank.

“News has reached us that your contract has come to an end, and I have been thinking that our contracts will expire at the same time,” Pohamba jokingly said during the meeting with Pupuma at State House.

Pupuma’s contract ended in May this year, while Pohamba’s term of office ends on 21 March 2015.

Pupuma has been replaced by Junius Mungunda.

The Namibian Head of State invited Pupuma for lunch to show the Namibian Government’s appreciation to the outgoing Standard Bank Namibia chief.

Pohamba said Standard Bank has done a wonderful job in Namibia.

“I am happy to see Standard Bank branches all over the country, delivering service to the people,” he said, adding that customers’ roads were cut short as Standard Bank has branches all over the country.

“We would like to give credit where it is due. Wherever you go, you can see and touch Standard Bank branches. This is a way of implementing the government’s policy of delivering services closer to people,” Pohamba indicated.

On his part, Pupuma thanked the government for allowing him to provide banking service to Namibians.

“I thank the Swapo-led government for making us feel home away from home. Thank you President Pohamba for being a father to us during our stay,” Pupuma said.

He indicated that he is leaving the Standard Bank Namibia with a happy heart, as he made significant inroads in the banking industry in the country.

Pupuma highlighted that 10 per cent of Standard Bank shares will be transferred to Standard Bank workers before the end of this year.

He noted that Standard Bank Namibia is en route towards a vision to have 25 per cent of the bank in the hands of Namibians by the year 2019.

Pupuma also announced that Standard Bank Namibia will be listed on the Namibia Stock Exchange (NSX) in 2019.
