Police arrest ECN officials in Ohangwena

OHANGWENA; Two trainees of the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN), who are suspected to have stolen a memory card from a hand-held voter verification device, appeared before court here on Tuesday.

Spokesperson of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Ohangwena Region, Sergeant Kaume Iitumba confirmed the duo’s court appearance to Nampa, saying the suspects are Immanuel Haushona and Shimweefeleni Tate Elai, who are both 28 years old.

“They appeared in the magistrate court at Ohangwena on the theft charge, as per Ohangwena CR 53/11/2014,” Iitumba noted, adding that the suspects were not asked to plead during their appearance.

The court has postponed their case to 08 December this year for further Police investigations.

The suspects were not granted bail and, as such, they are remanded in the holding cells at the Ohangwena NamPol station until their next appearance.

They allegedly stole the memory card during a training workshop for election officials, which was held at the Ponhofi Senior Secondary School (SSS) hall at Helao Nafidi town on Saturday.

Iitumba said the two men were arrested on Sunday, and the memory card was recovered.
