Police officers arrested for robbing Chinese national at gunpoint

SWAKOPMUND: Two police officers stationed at Swakopmund in the Erongo Region have been arrested in connection with an alleged armed robbery of a Chinese national at Oshikango last week.

Jafet Haimbodi, 29, was nabbed here last week Friday through an identification parade.

The second police officer, whose identity is being withheld until his court appearance, was arrested on Monday, also in Swakopmund.

The pair, and two other suspects who are yet to be arrested, are accused of robbing a Chinese national of approximately N.dollars 200 000 at Oshikango in the Ohangwena Region.

Sources informed Nampa last week that the police officers went to Oshikango on an official mission but somehow ended up committing the alleged offence.

Although they were wearing civilian clothes, the officers allegedly used their service pistols to commit the robbery.

After the crime, they allegedly shared the money between the four of them and it is not yet clear whether the money has been recovered yet.

Detective Chief Inspector Erastus Iikuyu of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) at Walvis Bay confirmed the arrests to Nampa on Monday.

“The matter is at a very early stage of investigations, so I cannot say anything further,” said the detective.

Haimbodi appeared in the Swakopmund Magistrate’s Court on Monday and was remanded in custody to allow for further police investigations and to enable him to acquire legal representation.

His case will be heard in court again on 09 February 2015.
