Police releases names of seven of nine people who died in tragic accident on Ondangwa-Omuthiya main road

ONGWEDIVA: Police in the Oshikoto Region have released the names of seven of nine people who died in a tragic accident on the Ondangwa-Omuthiya main road at around 12h00 on Friday.

The Namibian Police Force (NamPol)’s crime coordinator for the region, Deputy Commissioner Naomi Katjiua told Nampa yesterday the names of the other two victims, including an Angolan national, could not be released as their next of kin had not yet been traced.

The accident victims who have been positively identified are Hosea Awala, 40; Sakeus Nekwa Petrus, 21; Immanuel Panduleni Patrus, 3; Albertina Naufiku Noonga, 41; Lydia Nelulu, 31; Saima Shikongo, 28; and the 38-year-old Hilia Ndinelago Matheus.

They had been travelling from Ondangwa to Omuthiya when their Toyota station wagon with registration number N6491ND collided head-on with an oncoming truck at Oniingo village.

According to the police, the driver of the Toyota, which was used as taxi, had been overtaking another vehicle when it collided with the truck with the registration number N74818W.

The truck belongs to Independence Sign Construction, one of the companies involved in the construction of the Okatana-Onhuno Road.

Awala was the driver of the station wagon, while the driver of the truck has been identified as the 32-year-old Cleophas Ganeb, who was travelling alone – he was the only person to survive the accident.
