President Hifikepunye Pohamba conferred with ‘Grand Cross of the National Order of the Lion’

WINDHOEK: President Hifikepunye Pohamba was on Saturday conferred with the ‘Grand Cross of the National Order of the Lion’ in Dakar, Senegal.

This is the highest national order which Senegalese President Macky Sall can confer on a visiting Head of State.

Pohamba received the honour during his three-day state visit to that country, where he was also the guest of honour at the 54th anniversary of Senegal’s Independence on 04 April 2014.

According to a joint communique issued at the end of the three-day state visit, the honour was conferred to Pohamba in recognition for his outstanding contribution to the struggle for African unity and the rejuvenation of the continent.

In order to further strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries, the communique indicated that President Pohamba informed President Sall that a Namibian diplomatic mission at the level of ambassador will be opened in Dakar during 2014.

The two Heads of State gave directives to their respective Ministers of Foreign Affairs to start preparations for the holding of the inaugural Session of the Joint Commission on Cooperation to be held during the second half 2015 in Dakar, Senegal.
