President named Goodwill Ambassador for Women and Children’s Health in Africa

WINDHOEK: President Hifikepunye Pohamba was named ‘Goodwill Ambassador for Women and Children’s Health in Africa’ by the Forum of African First Ladies/Spouses Against Cervical, Breast and Prostate Cancer yesterday.

The Namibian leader was bestowed this honour during the opening of the three-day 8th Stop Cervical, Breast and Prostate Cancer in Africa conference underway in the capital.

The co-founder and director of the Forum of African First Ladies/Spouses Against Cervical, Breast and Prostate Cancer, Princess Nikky Onyeri said during the ceremony honouring Pohamba that they wish to have him engage various African leaders to find ways to fight cancer on the continent.

She said Pohamba would lobby for funding for the Forum, and also lobby for the support and implementation of cancer programmes on the continent.

Over 30 African First Ladies /Spouses are members of this Forum.

In his acceptance speech availed to Nampa, Pohamba committed himself to work with the Forum.

He said he will endeavour to work with the Forum of African First Ladies Against Cervical and Breast Cancer to champion and promote improvements and the expansion of healthcare services to African women and children, especially those in rural areas and informal settlements.

Over 1 500 delegates from different African countries, Cabinet Ministers and Parliamentarians as well as health experts are attending the conference.
