President Pohamba off for Maputo

President Hifikepunye Pohamba departed for Maputo, Mozambique on Wednesday for the official inauguration of that country’s new president Filipe Jacinto Nyusi.

Nyusi is the fourth president of Mozambique since its independence on 25 June 1975, following founding president Samora Machel, Joakim Chissano and Armando Guebuza.

He will be sworn in on Thursday.

The Namibian delegation includes Minister of Foreign Affairs Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.

Pohamba was seen off at the Eros Airport in the capital by Prime Minister Hage Geingob, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Peya Mushelenga and other senior Government officials.

He is expected back on Thursday this week.

Nyusi won the October 2014 presidential election with 57 per cent of the votes under the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) political party, which also won the parliamentary election.

He previously served the Government of Mozambique as Minister of Defence from 2008 to 2014.
