Provisional Voters’ Roll Open for Inspection

THE Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) on Thursday put the provisional voters’ register on display at designated places countrywide to allow all stakeholders and members of the public to inspect it.

The voters’ roll will be on display up to 15 April this year as proclaimed by the President and published in the Government Gazette No. 5440, Notice No. 50 and 51 of 01 April 2014.

The ECN’s public relations officer, Vicky Hango said in a media statement released on Saturday that the display of the provisional voters’ register is the next step in the electoral process after the general registration of voters.

She said this is specifically provided for in the electoral law in order to afford stakeholders and the general public an opportunity to inspect the provisional voters’ register with a view of correcting any mistakes made during the registration process. In accordance with Section 21 of the Electoral Act, 1992 (Act No. 24 of 1992), the ECN is obliged to prepare and display the provisional voters’ register for inspection by the public and all the stakeholders.

Hango also said the public display of the provisional voters’ roll also affords the public an opportunity to object to the inclusion of names of persons who are not supposed to appear in the register. The inspection of the provisional voters’ register will take place at designated places in all constituencies and local authorities countrywide. In addition to the designated display venues, the provisional voters’ registers can be viewed at the ECN headquarters at Election House in Windhoek. Viewing will take place from 08h00 to 17h00 in all constituencies.

Hango urged all registered political parties and associations, as well as registered voters who wish to lodge objections on the inclusion of some names in the registers, to do so in writing with the District Magistrates in their respective constituencies or local authorities as stipulated in Government Gazette No. 5440.

ECN has assigned officials to all designated venues to assist voters and stakeholders during the inspection period.
