Pupkewitz Takes Over Von Baum’s Motors

THE Pupkewitz Group of Companies has purchased Von Baum’s Motors. The transaction has been approved by the Namibian Competition Commission, the group said in a statement yesterday.

According to Pupkewitz Group managing director Jerome Davis, Von Baum’s has a solid reputation of good business acumen and quality service delivery built over the past 50 years.

Von Baum’s has arrived at the 50-year mark in its history and according to Georg Ruumldiger, owner of Von Baum’s, ‘the next step is to ensure that Von Baum’s keeps going for the next 50 years and the Pupkewitz Motor Division is the perfect partner.’

Managing director of Pupkewitz Motor Division Ekkerd van Wyk said the transition of ownership will not affect any operational affairs of the company.

Klaus von Baum, a motor mechanic by profession, and his wife Anneliese, opened Von Baum’s Motors in Otjiwarongo in 1961 and despite various setbacks, Von Baum’s Motors was granted a direct franchise in 1965, which saw the opening of a branch in Tsumeb.

“After tough negotiations, Von Baum’s Motors was given the green light to continue flying the Volkswagen banner. Soon after, Von Baum won the coveted Gold Pin Award of Volkswagen, as testament to his faith in and involvement with the brand,” said Ruumldiger.

In 1987, Ruumldiger – a cousin of the Von Baums – accepted a business proposal to join the business.

In 1996, George Bence took over Von Baum’s Motors in Tsumeb for his own account as a VW sub-dealer, leaving Klaus and Georg as equal partners in Von Baum’s in Otjiwarongo.

Two years later, in 1998, Klaus and Anneliese handed over the reins of Von Baum’s to Georg and his wife Beryl.

“For a small rural dealership to be counted amongst the top 12 dealers in Southern Africa is indeed an accomplishment,” said Ruumldiger.
