RDP not interested in by-elections: Nambinga

WINDHOEK: The Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) will not participate in the Otjiwarongo and Onyaanya Constituency by-elections slated for a yet-to-be announced date in July 2015.

A media statement issued on Monday by the RDP’s Secretary for Information and Publicity Jeremiah Nambinga said the opposition political party would rather participate in the Regional Council and Local Authority elections expected towards the end of this year.

“The Rally for Democracy and Progress National Executive Committee decided on Saturday (09 May 2015) that the party cannot participate in the upcoming by-elections for the Otjiwarongo and Onyaanya constituencies scheduled for July 2015, because of the short time frame in view of the ordinary elections to be conducted in November 2015 for regional and local authority government,” the statement reads.

The party is, however, urging all members, supporters and sympathizers to rededicate themselves for the full participation in the November 2015 Regional and Local Authority elections.

Meanwhile, the ruling Swapo-Party, DTA of Namibia, the United Democratic Front (UDF) and the National Unity Democratic Organization (NUDO), have expressed interest in the two by-elections.

The supplementary registration of voters has also already started in the two constituencies over the past week.

The Otjiwarongo Constituency by-election will be conducted in order to replace former Councilor Otto Ipinge, who was recently appointed the Governor of the Otjozondjupa Region, replacing former Governor Samuel Nuuyoma.

The Onyaanya Constituency by-election was necessitated by former councilor Henock Kankoshi being appointed governor of the Oshikoto Region.

Kankoshi replaces former Oshikoto Governor Penda Ya Ndakolo, who is now the Minister of Defence.
